The Power of PR & LinkedIn

How To Raise Your Profile, Build Relationships & Get More Sales . . . Thanks To The Power of PR & LinkedIn

What do you think when someone suggests PR?

Do you think of being featured the regional or national press? Or being interviewed on the radio or TV?

For me, PR has always felt a little bit mind-boggling and something that is difficult to achieve, time consuming and potentially hard work.

But no, it seems PR is very much misunderstood!

Caroline Joynson

Thankfully Caroline Joynson from Cheerleader PR, joined me as a LinkedIn LoveIn guest to put me right about PR and . . . even more excitingly . . . how PR can help us get noticed on LinkedIn!

Caroline explained that being in the press and media relations is only one part of PR.

PR also covers speaking opportunities, podcasts, being featured as a guest expert โ€“ anywhere, in fact, where you are getting in front of someone else’s audience on โ€˜meritโ€™ with no money being exchanged i.e. youโ€™re not paying for the endorsements!

PR is essentially other people saying that you’re good at what you do, rather than you saying it yourself.

The first thing that struck me in my conversation with Caroline was her mission to help business owners use PR so they can . . . โ€œraise their profile, build relationships and get more salesโ€ . . . which interestingly is very much what I say about LinkedIn!

Which is why PR and LinkedIn are such good bedfellows.

Theyโ€™re both about connecting with people, building relationships, raising awareness and growing your reputation, positioning you and your credibility and staying top of mind.

PR Generated Content

The other great benefit of PR from a LinkedIn perspective is that PR provides content to use on LinkedIn.

For example, as Caroline explained, the LinkedIn LoveIns I run provide a source of content which I repurpose in a number of ways including sharing it as LinkedIn article!

Any PR coverage, whether that’s in the press, on a podcast or an event you’ve spoken at, is content you can share on LinkedIn, and people do like to celebrate with you. Itโ€™s also great to feature on your LinkedIn profile within the Featured Section.

How else can you use PR generated content?

You could repurpose the content by doing a LinkedIn Live talking about your PR coverage or indeed if you prefer podcasting, try out the new LinkedIn Audio feature.

What about taking screenshots of published PR content?

Due to copyright protection we are not legally allowed to take screenshots of any media coverage which I didn’t know. I do think these are pretty hard to read anyway so the best option is to summarise what’s in the media coverage and share the link to read more. And of course make sure you tag both the journalist and the publication.

โญ Be Your Own Cheerleader โญ

Carolineโ€™s advice to business owners is to be your own cheerleader, big yourself up by sharing your expertise and experience, your story.

She appreciates that it may not be something everyone is comfortable with, but PR is not about making anything up to make you sound big, it’s about using you and your story and your expertise to help you promote you. And let’s face it, as business owners, promotion is key if we want to attract those lovely ideal dream clients we want to work with.

Where should you start with PR?

โญ Start with your existing network. Who do you know that has a Facebook group, does LinkedIn Lives or has a podcast where you could go and add value to their audience and where you can get credibility from them featuring you.
