๐ŸŽ™๏ธWhat Exactly is a Podcast?

One of the things that James talks about is that there is no daft question including โ€˜what is a podcast?โ€™.

And I loved Jamesโ€™ description as being โ€˜just a good conversationโ€™ often with two people chatting.

Because podcasts are audio-based, people can listen to them while theyโ€™re going about their day – at the gym, in the car, or even walking the dog.

And itโ€™s this flexibility that makes podcasting so attractive to businesses as a tool for engaging their audience, as people can listen to podcasts whenever and wherever they want.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธThe Big Podcasting Myth – Isnโ€™t the Market Too Crowded?

Are there already โ€˜too manyโ€™ podcasts out there?

Arguably yes there are a lot of podcasts out there, but James reckons that 95% of podcasts arenโ€™t that great because theyโ€™re either lacking strategy, not serving a clear audience, or simply not well executed. That leaves the top 5% making the real impact.

So if youโ€™re thinking of starting a podcast or have one already, the place to start is with a solid plan, clear goals, and a focus on delivering value to your audience.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Why Should You Start a Podcast?

Podcasts are an incredible way to build deeper connections with your audience. They allow you to share your knowledge, stories, and insights in a very personal way. it creates a sense of intimacy and trust thatโ€™s hard to achieve with written content alone.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ But Do You Need a Plan?

Iโ€™m always banging on about the importance of having a strategy on LinkedIn, and itโ€™s no different with podcasts. James emphasised this too – you canโ€™t just dive into podcasting without a clear plan. You need to know who youโ€™re talking to and why you’re doing it.

Start with these two big questions:

  1. Who is your audience? โ€“ Are you speaking to potential clients, industry peers, or another specific group?
  2. Why are you doing it? โ€“ Whatโ€™s your goal? Is it to educate, inspire, or entertain? Knowing this will shape your content and keep you focused.

Without this clarity, itโ€™s easy to create content that doesnโ€™t resonate with anyone. But with the right strategy, your podcast can become a powerful marketing tool that builds your brand and engages your audience.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธHow Can LinkedIn Help?

Once youโ€™ve got your podcast episodes recorded, there are so many ways to share them on LinkedIn. For example you can . . .

๐Ÿ‘‰Share clips from the podcast – pull out a few golden nuggets and create short video clips or audiograms that you can then post

๐Ÿ‘‰ Write posts about the key topics โ€“ Iโ€™m all for repurposing content, so take a snippet or insight from your podcast and create a text post for LinkedIn

๐Ÿ‘‰ Create LinkedIn Articles โ€“ one of the things I do with my LinkedIn Lives is use it to create a LinkedIn article (like this one!) You can get a transcription of your podcast that you can use to create an article and still link the podcast within the article giving your audience a choice of how they want to consume your content

๐Ÿ‘‰ Feature your podcast on your profile โ€“ use the โ€˜Featuredโ€™ section on the LinkedIn profile to link to your podcast

๐ŸŽ™๏ธDonโ€™t Forget to Repurpose!

One of the most valuable tips from James was about repurposing content. Whether itโ€™s your podcast or a LinkedIn Live session you can squeeze so much more value out of it by turning it into different types of content.

For example, you could take the audio from a LinkedIn Live broadcast, edit it into a podcast, and then break that down into bite-sized posts or blog articles. One piece of content can give you a monthโ€™s worth of material if you do it right!

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ So, How Do You Get Started?

James suggests starting with a simple plan: think about your first six episodes.

Either come up with six topics youโ€™re passionate about or six guests youโ€™d love to interview. Thatโ€™s enough to get you started without feeling overwhelmed.

Once youโ€™ve got those ideas in place, the rest, such as equipment and tech will fall into place more easily.

Donโ€™t get caught up in the technical details right away; focus on the content and strategy first.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Whatโ€™s the Perfect Length for a Podcast?

‘Is there an ideal length for a podcast’ was a question that came up and for James the answer was a simple no!

Your podcast should be as long as it needs to be to deliver value. Whether thatโ€™s 20 minutes or an hour depends on your content and audience. Some podcasts are quick bites, while others dive deep into complex topics. The key is making sure it holds your audienceโ€™s attention from start to finish.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธKey Takeaways
