‘Be YOU!’ How To Boost Your Visibility On LinkedIn By Leveraging Your Personal Brand

What does it take to be successful in business? Well, a lot of it is down to being known for something and communicating what it is you stand for, so you are visible to your audience.

For companies it’s their brand. I only need to say Apple or Nike and you get a picture and feel for that company.

On an individual level, it’s your ‘personal brand’.

“Your personal brand is what people are saying about you when you’re NOT in the room!” Jeff Bezos

According to an article in the Financial Times, having a personal brand is one of 5 essential skills for navigating the workplace throughout the 2020s, because it helps you stand out in a competitive marketplace with an online presence that gets you found.

For business owners, solopreneurs and entrepreneurs, coaches and consultants, being good is not enough. You also have to combine being good at something with consistent communications if you really want to fly!

What is Personal Branding?

A common misconception is that personal branding is what you wear or it’s your business logo.

But it’s more than that. Your personal brand is how people experience you – how you dress, speak, your non-verbal communications, your energy, your attitude and behaviour, even down to how you walk into a room!

It’s also how you show up on LinkedIn.

So, whether you realise it or not your personal brand is speaking volumes to the people you want to meet.

A Match Made In Heaven!

I was very excited to be joined by Deborah Ogden, a personal brand and impact expert, on a recent LinkedIn LoveIn to explain all about personal branding and how it can get you noticed on LinkedIn.

As a social media platform for businesses and professionals, LinkedIn lends itself brilliantly as a platform on which to consistently communicate your personal brand, raising your visibility, and getting known as the expert you really are.

Here’s how LinkedIn can help you.

1. Your LinkedIn Profile

The first thing of course is your LinkedIn profile. It’s your shop window and one that you can use to position why you, your expertise and what it is YOU want people to think, know and feel about you when they visit your profile.

A common challenge a lot of people have is what to write on their LinkedIn profile. LinkedIn feels like it wants you to use LinkedIn as an online CV – but it’s so much more than that.

By knowing what your personal brand is and what you stand for helps you to articulate your values and expertise, so you can connect with your ideal audience and importantly they know where to find you.

In turn, this makes it easy for people in your network to recommend and refer you.

If your LinkedIn profile could do with a little love then check out my ebook ‘1 Hour To A LinkedIn Profile That Gets You Found & Noticed’ for some inspiration!

2. Post Content & Engage

The next step is to then communicate your personal brand and raise your visibility by posting content AND by engaging (liking and commenting) on other people’s posts.

Another common challenge people tell me they have is worrying about what to post; about what they should say and how it might come across, so end up doing nothing – so hence being the world’s best kept secret instead of being known for the expert they really are.

Deborah offered us some advice here and suggested that when we post content on LinkedIn, ask ourselves the ‘So What’ question.

Ask yourself what’s in it for your audience, what do they want to know and why are you posting.

I know there is a big debate around business Vs personal posts on LinkedIn, but you don’t have to leave your personality or values behind on LinkedIn.

Stories always work well especially when you can relate them to business. The key is to know your audience and write for them.

But essentially be authentic and be yourself. Own your story and who you are.

And, if you are hovering and doubting whether to post . . . just do it!

Don’t be the world’s best kept secret!

  • Deborah’s Impact Method and the 3Cs to personal branding: Clarity; Communication; Capitalise
  • The three great questions you can ask 10 people to get you started on developing your personal brand and looking for themes. The gold is in the 3% where you could do better and where you unlock your potential

  • And the little nuances that can impact your brand, those small behaviours that can undermine your brand such as not engaging back with people who take the time to engage on your posts!

The key to success is to take action!
