How LinkedIn Helps Students Navigate The Workplace

Over the holidays, my niece, who is studying photography at Newcastle University, asked me to help her set up her LinkedIn profile. It was key homework she had to do as part of her course!

Then back in November, I was presenting at the University of Sheffield’s Journalism Careers week.

I’ve been doing this for the last couple of years supporting students in setting up their LinkedIn profiles and how to use LinkedIn to find internships and jobs.

It’s been online for the last three sessions but before that it was face to face at the very impressive Firth Hall.

Why do students need LinkedIn?

Some may wonder why LinkedIn is important for students and young people.

But it’s essential – dare I say more important that your CV?

That could be controversial but according to an article in the Financial Times there are 5 essentials skills for navigating the workplace in the 2020s.

One of which is . . .

‘Building Your Personal Brand’

Having a personal brand is about standing out in a competitive marketplace. There’s a lot of noise out there and getting your foot on the first step of the career ladder is getting harder and harder.

Plus, it’s about having an online presence so potential employers can find you. According to CareerBuilder more than half of employers won’t hire potential candidates without some sort of online presence.

So where better to build your personal brand than on LinkedIn?

As a social media platform for businesses, professionals and recruiters, LinkedIn lends itself brilliantly as a platform on which to build your personal brand.

Plus, it gets you found on Google, it helps you find jobs, research companies, and connect with key employers.

Know anyone who would benefit from the recording of the LinkedIn training done for the University of Sheffield Journalism Studies Dept?

Know anyone who would benefit from watching the recording?

If you know any students, either at home or at work for whom knowing how to use LinkedIn would be helpful, then please comment below saying “yes please” and I’ll forward the recording on of the session I did for the University of Sheffield Journalism Studies Dept.
